Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project:The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid. The North East natural gas grid will be spread over about 1,656 kilometers.
The project aims to connect the North Eastern states with the national gas grid. The project has been started under the Centre’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project’.

Under this project, the pipeline will be connected to all the major cities of North East from Guwahati. Under this project, Numaligarh refinery will also be connected to it. Under this project, the capitals of eight states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh will be connected. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved Viability Gap Funding/ Capital Grant of 60% of the estimated cost of Rs. 9,265 crore and the project is expected to be completed in 2022.
The project was launched in October 2016. It aims to provide PNG (piped natural gas) to all households for cooking in the eastern region of the country and CNG (compressed natural gas) for vehicles. The project envisages laying a 3376-km pipeline 6 states which includes Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam. In 2016, the government provided a capital grant of ₹5,176 crore, or 40% of the project cost of the 2,655-km Jagdishpur-Haldia and Bokaro-Dhamra (JHBDPL) gas pipeline project, which GAIL is currently executing.

GAIL is also laying a 750-km line from Barauni to Guwahati as part of the ₹12,940 crore JHBDPL project, which is also known as the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga’ project. This is proposed to be connected to the North-East via the Indradhanush grid.
