The Andes, the great mountain system of South America, rise in crumpled blocks along Argentina’s western border.

The Andes are the principal mountains of South America that were made during Tertiary Mountain building activity. It is the best example of a cordillera, which is a mountain made of several processes, in several periods, and several ways. The Andes cordillera is essentially made of andesite and is the longest system of high mountain ranges on earth. It marks the convergence of the Pacific and Latin American plate.

The mountains are highest and widest in the north, Where Aconcagua one of the highest of these peaks, is the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. Other noteworthy peaks are Ojos del Salado the highest active volcano on the border between Argentina and Chile.

In Patagonia, they form a natural boundary between Argentina and Chile following crestline principle.
