Background
About (International North South Transport Corridor) INSTC
The International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is the ship, rail, and road route for moving freight between India, Russia, Iran, Europe and Central Asia. This INSTC project was initiated by Russia, India and Iran in September 2000 in St. Petersburg. The agreement was signed on 16th May 2002.
INSTC will serve as an important trade corridor project, wherein India is partnering with 12 countries to establish an economic corridor for the benefit of our people.
It is an encouraging factor that Uzbekistan and Afghanistan have also shown their interest of to join the multilateral corridor project.
About Chabahar Port
Chabahar Port provides direct access to India’s Farkhor Air Base in Tajikistan. Chabahar route will result in 60% reduction in shipment costs and 50% reduction in shipment time from India to Central Asia.
India wants Chabaharport to be included in the 13-nation International North South Transport Corridor that extends from India to Russia, and expand INSTC membership by including Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
India propose that that the land route via Kabul and Tashkent would form the INSTC’s “Eastern corridor” and that Chabahar will change the “geo-economy” of the region.

Iran wants assistance from India for developing this Chabahar Port:
- Through the provision of cranes and other equipment at the port
- Rail tracks, signal and switching equipment for the Chabahar-Zahedan railway project.
