SpaceX launches 60 Starlink Broadband Satellites

Elon Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, launched 60 Starlink Broadband Satellites with Falcon 9 first stage booster into the orbit. Satellites were launched from Space Launch Complex 40 in Florida..

  • This two-stage-to-orbit had also launched Sentinel-6A mission earlier.
  • It was 13th Starlink launch in 2021 for SpaceX.  70 meters tall, Falcon 9 rocket was successfully lift-off marking the fourth time SpaceX launched a batch of Starlink satellites in a bid to expand flourishing broadband constellation.
  • SpaceX will launch its next mission dubbed as “space station resupply mission” on June 3, 2021.

  • It was 85th landing by SpaceX’s reusable launch system development program. SpaceX has been developing technologies since several years to provide a system of rapid reusable launch of space vehicles. It will be launched during India’s United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Presidency term in August 2021 (Presidency of the UNSC Council is held by each of the members in turn for one month).

  • UNITED AWARE will increase the situational awareness of the peacekeepers by providing terrain-related information.

Ayush Clinical Case Repository Portal to be Launched

  • Ayush Clinical Case Repository portal will be launched by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on May 27, 2021.
  • Along with the portal, third version of Ayush Sanjivani App will also be launched.

  • This portal will act as a platform providing support both to Ayush practitioners and general public.

Global Average Temperature could pass 1.5° C during 2021-25: WMO, UK Met Office

  • According to the Annual Climate Update provided by the United Kingdom (UK) Met Office and World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is a 40% possibility of the annual average global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5° C(2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre industrial levels in one of the next 5 years (2021-25).
  • Average temperatures are likely to be at least 1° C (estimated to be between 0.9° C and 1.8° C) warmer in each of the coming five years (2021-25).
  • At least one year between 2021-2025 will become the warmest year on record, replacing 2016.
    • The temperature rise is significant, because as per the Paris Agreement signed in 2015, global leaders had committed to limit global warming to 1.5° C and well below 2° C by the end of the century.

    I).2020 was one of the three warmest years on Record (1st-2016, 2nd – 2020 & 3rd 2019), the temperature in 2020 was 1.2° C above the pre-industrial times (1850-1900 baseline.)

    • The past seven years (2015-21) have been the warmest ever recorded & the last decade (2010-20) was the warmest decade
    • The report also states that the National commitments set by countries to cut Greenhouse gas emissions is not enough to fulfill the Paris agreement.

    • The temperature rise highlights the importance of cutting Greenhouse Gas Emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.

  • Indian economist and Nobel Laureate, Amartya Kumar Sen, was conferred with “Princess of Asturias Award” in social sciences category which is Spain’s top prize. He was selected out of 41 candidates from 20 countries.

  • About the Award
  • Sen has been conferred which Spain’s highest prize in social science category for called “Princess of Asturias Award”. It comprises of a Joan Miro sculpture as a symbol, an insignia, a diploma, and a cash prize of 50,000 Euros. His candidature was forwarded by Director General of Casa Asia (Barcelona), Javier Parrondo.

  • Left Democratic Front (LDF)

RBI Annual Report-2021

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) published its annual report and highlights “asset quality of banks and their preparedness requires close monitoring for higher provisioning for upcoming quarters
  • RBI in its semi-annual financial stability report earlier highlighted, bad loan ratio of banks could rise to 13.5% under baseline stress scenario by September 2021
  • Key findings of report
  • In its report, RBI cautioned “banks being lenders will have to provide true picture of bad loans after Supreme Court lifted interim stay on classifying non-performing assets (NPA) in March 2021.
  • According to it, waiver of compound interest on all loan accounts opted for moratorium during March-August 2020 would put
  • stress on financial health of banks.
  • Gross NPA ratio of banks decreased from 8.2% in March 2020 to 6.8% in December 2020.
  • Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) of banks improved from 66.6% in March 2020 to 75.5 % by December 2020, because of prudent provisioning by banks above regulatory prescriptions on accounts availing moratorium and undergoing restructuring.
  • Capital to risk-weighted assets ratio (CRAR) of banks increased to 15.9% by December 2020, in March it was 14.8%.
  • Gross NPA ratio for non-banking financial institutions (NBFCs) increased from 6.8% in march to 5.7% in December 2020.
  • Capital adequacy ratio of NBFCs increased from 24.8% in December 2020 from 23.7% in March.
