Greenwashing

• When companies are indulged in dubious activities to present false claims on net zero action, it is called Greenwashing.
• UN Secretary has accused companies around the world of Green Washing and raised the voice for zero tolerance against it.
• Government and private companies pledge to going carbon neutral or net zero.
• When total emission is balanced by absorption or removal of carbon dioxide from the emission, it is called Net zero.

Net_Zero
• Sikkim in India is only state which is carbon negative. (Absorbs more carbon dioxide than it emits)
• India is third largest carbon emission but its per capita emission is very low.
• India has net zero target for 2070.
• Private companies like coke, SKIMS have been Greenwashing to venture profits.
• Companies also buy cheap Carbon Credit and end up emitted more level of carbon than notified, undermining the global effort.

• Carbon credit is a permit which allows the holder to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases in atmosphere.

• US and Europe constantly export pollution by exporting outdated machineries like cars to developing countries like that of Africa reducing their emission and increasing the level of emission in developing countries.
• Due to incentives and cheap export, poor countries are cornered to but such machineries taking a load off the government’s hands and selfishly moving towards their non zero goal.
• Due to greenwashing, common goal of sustainable planet is jeopardised and world fails to deliver urgent carbon action.

• Many suggestions are made by environment experts across the world to deal with Greenwashing
• Private companies should defund fossil fuel investment ventures slowly eliminating its use and moving towards sustainable energy.
• Verifiable short-term goals should be presented to achieve net zero goal.
• Process of working towards net zero goal should be achieved with transparency across all boards and between state and non-state entities.
• Government and private companies should end all activities which might directly or indirectly lead to deforestation.

• Regular audits should be held to verify the claims made by companies on their action against carbon and greenhouse gases emission.
• Governments should frame common regulations and adopt new standards with strictness to eliminate loop holes which should be widely accepted by all sectors
• Annual goals should be set up by private companies and 5-year action plans should be made by government to work together on net zero action.
