If you see some of these #clouds they are often mistaken as unidentified flying objects due to their lens-shaped formations. Well, these clouds are usually stationary and are formed perpendicular to the flow of the #wind.
The #lenticular_clouds are in the form of #lens_like_clouds_formed in the wave-like turbulence produced as #air_flows across high ground. When air flows across a #mountain_ridge, it is forced upward into a region where it is too cold and heavy.

Once it crosses the ridge it sinks back because of its weight, but like a spring that has been stretched too far it overshoots, so the air moves down stream, continues to #oscillate (bounce) up and down.

They may develop at several levels at the same time. The long white cloud of the southern #Alps of #New Zealand is a good example. Lee waves may also have roll clouds forming beneath the wave crests. A pattern of standing (not moving) waves forms in the air downstream from the mountain.

The clouds form when the air in a moist layer, rises high enough for condensation to occur. But as soon as the air sinks, the droplets evaporate and the cloud disappear. (The clouds do not disappear so quickly when ice crystals form. The ice crystals do not evaporate as quickly as the droplets and therefore, leave a trail).
The clouds are attached to the wave pattern, and a cloud is located in the crest of each #wave while the trough of each wave is clear. The waves do not move so the clouds cannot move. A region of extreme danger and #turbulence is called the rotor.
