Canary Islands forms an volcanic island archipelago comprising of Macaronesia ecoregion with the Azores, Cape Verde, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. The archipelago consists of seven large and several smaller islands, all of which are volcanic in origin. Tenerife is known to be the third tallest volcano in the world measured from its base on the ocean floor. During the times of the Spanish Empire the Canaries were the main stopover for Spanish galleons (on their way to the Americas).
