Western African Coast The western coast of Arica has several segments, the coastal regions are identifiable by the most important characteristics they exhibit-for examples—slave coast, Ivory coast, Gold coast, Grain coast etc. Slave Coast The Slave Coast is a historical name formerly used for parts of coastal West Africa along the Bight of Benin. The name is derived from the fact that it was a major source of African slaves during the Atlantic slave trade from the early 16th century to the 19th century. Other nearby coastal regions historically known by their prime colonial export are the Gold Coast, the Ivory Coast, and the Pepper Coast (or Grain Coast). Ivory Coast Ivory Coast officially the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire is a country in West Africa with the port of Abidjan being its biggest city. The Gold Coast was the name for a region on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa that was rich in gold, petroleum, sweet crude oil and natural gas. Gold Coast is a former British colony in West Africa known today as the Republic of Ghana. During slave trade era, Europeans identified the region as a large supply of and market for gold that existed there. The Pepper Coast or Grain Coast was a coastal area of western Africa, between Cape Mesurado and Cape Palmas. It encloses the present republic of Liberia.
