World Diabetes Day
Every year November 14 is considered as World Diabetes Day. For the first time International Diabetes Foundation and the World Health Organization created World Diabetes Day in 1991.
Diabetes is a chronic disease where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or any insulin at all. It is called as the silent killer as it damages all the organs inside the body like liver, Kidney, heart, digestive system, etc. In Diabetes the blood sugar levels go too high as the pancreas are not producing insulin efficiently to balance the sugar in the blood. Therefore, the diabetic has to take the aid of medicines like metformin to control the blood sugar.
This disease saps the energy of the patient and if it is not taken care of it affects the well-being of the patient. It leads to serious health conditions. This is the reason why this World Diabetes Day is considered to spread awareness and education throughout the world.

HISTORY OF WORLD DIABETES DAY
Diabetes is considered to have been around 1550 BC. The successful extraction and injection of insulin into humans was discovered in 1922. So, comparatively, our understanding of diabetes is quite new compared to its long, arduous march through history.
Types of Diabetes
Diabetes can affect people of all ages. Most forms of diabetes are chronic and last for a long while most of such forms are manageable with medications and lifestyle changes. Generally, 3 types of diabetes:
- Type 1 Diabetes:
when the body loses the ability to make insulin or can only make a very small amount of insulin. Type 1 diabetes is usually caused by an autoimmune process, and your body’s immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing cells. About 10% of individuals with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. - Type 2 Diabetes:
caused by a dual defect of resistance to the action of insulin combined with an inability to make enough insulin to overcome the resistance. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and represents 80% to 90% of diabetes worldwide. - Other Types of Diabetes:
a miscellaneous category that includes unusual or rare inherited or acquired causes of diabetes. This represents the minority of people with diabetes. - Gestational Diabetes:
diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy.
Among all type of diabetes type II has ballooned to 90% of the those affected, with an estimated $425 million individuals affected worldwide. This alarming rise is one of the reasons the WHO and IDF wanted to create World Diabetes Day — to help spread awareness.
Having to manage blood sugar levels on a daily basis is a time-consuming and costly endeavor, as the economic cost of diabetes globally is around $727 billion (USD) and in the US alone it costs almost a third of that, at $245 billion.
The costliness and its prevention create even more reason for us to spread awareness of the disease, and also celebrate the birth of the man who helped bring insulin into the modern world as an effective treatment against it.
