Ganga Drainage System In Uttarakhand, it emerges from the confluence and base of the Satopanth glacier and Bhagirath glacier. At Devprayag, when it emerges from the Bhagirathi River, it acquires the name Ganga. The Mandakini, Nandakini and Pindar rivers are its principal tributaries.
Ganga river system includes the Ganga and its tributaries like Yamuna, Ghagra, Gandak, Kosi, Mahaganga etc. the Ganga rises in Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. The river acquires its name after its Lead – streams –Alaknanda and Bhagirathi unite at Devaprayag. The Ganga emerges from hills near Hardwar. Beyond Farakka, it flows east-southwards into Bangladesh where it is known as Padma.

The Padma is joined by Brahmaputra which is known as Jamuna in Bangladesh. After this confluence, it is known as Megha which falls into Bay of Bengal after forming the largest delta of the world. The Yamuna is the right –bank tributary of the Ganga.
It rises at the Yamunotri Glacier in Uttar Pradesh. It flows southwards upto Agra and further down towards south-east till it joins the Ganga at Allahabad. The Ghagra which is known as Karnali in its upper reaches in Nepal originates beyond the Himalayas.
It often shifts its course and leads to floods. It joins Ganga near Chhapra. The Gandek, another left-bank tributary rises near Sino-Nepal boundary and drains the central part of Nepal. It enters India in Bihar where it meets the Ganga. Both Gandek and Kosi change their course and are notorious for their floods in Bihar.
