In general any one or combination of the following methods may be applied for reducing the volume of water in the lake: controlled breaching,
• construction of an outlet control structure,
• pumping or siphoning out the water from the lake, and
• making a tunnel through the moraine barrier or under an ice dam.
Violent flooding from glacier lakes dammed by loose rock has become more frequent as global temperatures rise and ice melts. Climate scientists have warned the floods pose an increasing danger across the wider Himalayan mountain range and the melting causing them to the entire world.
Glacial lakes are formed due to glacier retreat and hold valuable geological information, including fossils and landmass formation.
