Ayushman Bharat-Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs)
According to confirmed sources in the Health Ministry, the five-year-old Ayushman Bharat-Health and Wellness Centers (AB-HWCs) programme in India, which has expanded to more than 1.60 lakh centres and recorded foot traffic of over 178.87 crore (as of June end), is undergoing its largest-ever expansion of services.
The central government is expanding its offerings of services, such as screening, prevention, control, and management of non-communicable diseases, care for common ophthalmic and ENT issues, fundamental oral health services, elderly and palliative care services, emergency medical services, and screening and management of mental health conditions.

At the level of SHC-HWC, a new cadre of 1.29 lakh Community Health Officers has been established to serve as clinicians, public health administrators, and team leaders for the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), Anganwadi Workers (AWW), and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM).
Aiming to integrate promotional, preventive, curative, palliative, and rehabilitative aspects of Universal Health Coverage, AB-HWCs was launched in 2018. The objective is to bring AB-HWCs closer to people’s homes in order to deliver Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC), which includes services for maternity and child health, non-communicable diseases, free necessary medications, and diagnostic tests.
